About Me

Holly Rubenstein aka The Travel Flamingo

Hi! I'm Holly aka The Travel Flamingo.

The Travel Flamingo was created for the perpetual long-weekender, who aspires to sleep in luxurious and unique locations and eat in the most vibrant and delicious restaurants.

Like me, you love reading about travel - blogs, sites, magazines, Instagram pages - but you spend hours, pre-holiday, tapping them all into your Google Maps, tirelessly planning which place would work when and where.

Here you'll find my reviews of hotels and restaurants, and ideas of what to do, but you also have the option to open these locations collectively on your phone in Google Maps. They will stay on your city map throughout your trip with photos of my own trips marking my favourite hotspots. By opening your maps you'll be able to see where you are and which places I recommend are nearby to you - saving you inputting every recommendation separately. If you want, you can even follow my routes.

I'm a freelance writer and broadcast journalist living in London, who writes for papers like The TelegraphThe Times, Guardian, Independent, Mail on Sunday and Metro and broadcasts with the BBC, Reuters, ITV, Getty and Snapchat.

Over the years I've covered everything from food and travel, to health and lifestyle. Recently, my specialism has been entertainment and culture, with interview highlights including George Clooney (even better looking in real life); the Jennifers (Lawrence and Aniston); and everyone's all time hero, Sir David Attenborough, twice.

This project is particularly close to my heart. After a spell of illness, I found myself compulsively planning mini breaks (most of which I didn't go on!) The visualisation of somewhere new, inviting and beautiful was something to head towards, somewhere to escape to and gave me hope in my recovery.

I hope these locations, as the list grows over time, can provide the same enjoyment that they gave me.

getting to know me...

Favourite UK hotel - Babington House, Somerset

Favourite International hotel - Four Seasons Maui, Hawaii

Favourite holiday destination - Miami, Florida was my second home so it will always have a special place in my heart. Recently, revisiting Barcelona and Prague has been fantastic and Brits don't visit the US states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico as often as they should - they are out of this world

Career highlight - Covering the World's 50 Best Restaurants in London's Guildhall and flying out to Spain to reunite with the chefs at the winning restaurant - El Celler de Can Roca in Girona. Touring and dining at the restaurant was absolutely extraordinary. For Josep Roca - of the Roca brothers - to emerge from the kitchen to sit down and talk with me at the table was the icing on the (absolutely delicious) cake.

Career lowlight - Flying. Ironic, I know. Every time the plane turns a corner during take off and landing is pretty much a career lowlight. Thankfully, flying for me is like childbirth - I forget the pain as soon as I land and start planning my next adventures.

Where next? Currently, Toronto, Niagara, the Finger Lakes, the Catskill Mountains, Manhattan, Atlanta, and South Florida are confirmed, but the list is ever-growing.

Travel essentials - P20 Suncream, Mrs Whites mosquito spray, EYE mosquito bands and Avene thermal water spray in the summer, and Little Hotties hand and foot warmers in the winter.
